Over the past twenty years, many reviewers have expressed respect for this story by Anton Myrer, and I am pleased to add my heartfelt endorsement. I am now in my 80th year, and I read this story over 30 years ago. It comes to mind often, and I now look forward to meeting its unforgettable characters again. I have puzzled a bit as to why the story is so captivating, and have come to a partial solution which I'll offer here for consideration by others who love the story. I believe that Myrer describes extremely well the impact that unexpected events and seemingly minor decisions can have on one's future life. Could there possibly be any more cataclysmic event than the arrival of a world war when one is twenty years of age? The effects of such an event could not possibly be anticipated, and the impacts are far-reaching indeed. As readers of the story, we all can identify with such overwhelming currents we have experienced, whether we have been to war or not. We are all to some extent those on the raft being carried downstream by the flood.

Great story. I read it years ago as a Readers Digest condensed version. I've read it several times over the last 30 years, and bought the out of print hard copy to give to my 26 year old granddaughter. She, like me , is an avid reader. I hope she enjoys it as much as I have.
I just watched the movie, The Big Chill, last night. I was in college when the characters were in college, I could sing along with all of the songs, I've seen people (including old loves) I knew from that time frame. We shared bitter and sweet memories about those old day and where we've gone from there. The movie made me laugh; the movie made me cry.

The Last Convertible had the same effect on me. It is a story about a small group of young men and women who meet before the first day of college in 1940. One of the them owns a Packard convertible. (Think Rolls Royce convertible today). Every reader who starts reading this book will think, "Uh oh, I know what they're all about to face - World War II." The frame for the story is a young, Vietnam era man, the child of one of the women, who wants to know which one of the older men is really his father. The story unfolds about how bitter and sweet the period before the war was, and what happens to the ones who survive the war. Evocative is the best adjective I can use to describe the book. I could "feel" what it was like to be a young man or woman one generation earlier than I became a young man.

I bought The Last Convertible for a friend of mine who is 84 years old. He could hum the Big Band tunes mentioned in the book, he put on a uniform in WWII, he had a sweetheart back then. My friend told me that he laughed and he cried when it read the book because it brought back so many memories. It was one of the best books he'd ever read.

The Last Convertible is out of print. I bought a used copy on for $25.00. , use your influence and get it reprinted; it's a classic. Readers, find a copy of this book even if you have to check it out of the library. (Then buy a copy from after it's reprinted.)
The Last Convertible is an esquiste trek through the past. Author Anton Myrer takes us on a journey into the lives of five young men who meet and become friends while attending Harvard in the era surrounding WWII. They are bound by a fantastic automobile - a gargantuan Packard nicknamed the Empress. Each of the men has a unique life backstory and is uniquely created to demonstrate a life of his own. Myrer introduces us to their girlfriends and families as we journey through these war years learning of their lives and loves and adventures.

I first read this novel while in university. I was an English lit major and I neglected my own studies for a period so that I could finish this wonderful book. I passed the book off to all my friends and my girlfriend. We were already living our own version of this comraderie so reading about this "romantic" era's friends only reinforced what we had. It was as if I could smell the same air and feel the same breezes as the characters.

The only problem arises after the characters leave Harvard. Once they move into the real world, their lives seem forced and not as interesting as they did when they are all together as a unit. It is as if the total is not equal to a sum of the parts.

It is still refreshing to read a story that provides us with such a vast landscape, so finely crafted. It is a book filled with prose-like writing that is elaborate and detailed without being bogged down by the words.

I really can't recommend this book enough. I think that you will find this to be a book you can expect to one day be taught in school.
This is a big, sprawling, wonderful, old fashion novel about the generation that fought in World War II. The book is full of interesting characters and the story follows them from their college days in the 1940s all the way to the 1970s. They were a steady lot. They did what they were supposed to. They stuck it out. That's what they were all about and Myrer does an excellent job of recreating their personalities along with the details that make the era come to life, including the convertible that appears throughout the story almost like a character. He throws in a couple of exciting battle scenes and even through some of the subplots border on soap opera, its still a top flight read for anyone interested in the "The Greatest Generation."
